Fall + Acupuncture

With the glimpse of another fat moon last night, and much cooler weather, it feels like it could actually be November soon.

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) the fall season is associated with our lungs + large intestine, all about taking in + letting go. This is a good time of year to notice and address: neck and upper back pain, allergies, skin changes, and digestive issues. Acupuncture can be very supportive during the change of seasons, helping harmonize our internal + external environments. We simply breath, move, eat, adjust, dress, etc. differently as the weather shifts, and there's so much we can do - to take care of ourselves - and welcome the change.

I've also been addressing a lot of adrenal health issues with clients this season, with a special focus on western herbs and diet. Our adrenal health is symbiotic with our stress levels. I'm hearing from so many clients that this time of year is very stressful + challenging professionally. How we're living and caring for ourselves can have a tremendous effect on how well we manage our stress and stressors.

A few very simple things to keep in mind this season:

Warm + cooked foods: Try to eat at least 2 cooked meals per day (opt for roasted vegetables or soups instead of salads), warm drinks (avoid ice in beverages) and incorporating warm spices (ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, etc.). Warm foods are easier to digest and promote circulation. 

Sleep routines: Adjusting to earlier sunsets, it's useful to take notice of earlier bedtimes, but more importantly, setting a schedule that works best for you. Whatever time it is, try to go to bed and wake up at similar times throughout the week. Regular retire/rise schedules helps our body adjust to better sleep patterns.

Adaptogenic herbs: Assist the body in adapting to stress.

Avoid skipping meals: Skipping meals creates more stress in the body and disrupts blood sugar. Simply eating regular meals helps keep cortisol, adrenaline, and insulin balanced.

Let Go: Sometimes everything that we're suppose to be doing can actually be causing more stress. This is especially true if you're experiencing adrenal fatigue. Letting yourself rest or simply "not-doing" can be tremendously restoring too.
